Favorite Speech
My favorite speech was probably the demonstration speech. I liked being able
to do something with my hands. For some reason this helped a lot with my
nerves, I wasn’t nearly as nervous while giving this speech as I was during the
others. It was much easier to incorporate a demonstration into my speech than I
thought it would be; this speech was also probably the most fun one to write
because I got to base everything else off of my demonstration. This speech
probably went so well for me because I choose a topic that I was really
interested in, and it was something that I do every day. So I wasn’t very
nervous about messing up at all! Even though I hate giving speeches, having
something to do in the middle that takes the focus off of the talking actually make
it somewhat bearable. When I give speeches in the future, I hope that I can incorporate
a demonstration into it somehow!

You make a very interesting point, and it totally makes sense. I know that for a lot of people they worry about what to do with their hands while they are speaking. I'm sure this could actually be quite difficult for some people to deal with. So in a sense, the demonstration part of the speech is really kind-of therapeutic, helping to relieve stress and tension through using your hands. That's actually a pretty cool way of looking at it. I guess you could really learn from that in other types of speeches as well. Using more hand gestures would probably be helpful in a similar way as the demonstrations were.
ReplyDeleteI felt the same way when I was giving the demonstration speech. I was able to do something with all my energy and it made me think that I appeared less nervous to my audience. So there was a snowball effect of calming. However, I was worried that the demonstration would take up a lot of time, which initially worried me, so I suppose they cancel each other out. The other thing about the speech is that most people almost had to choose something they knew about to demonstrate, so it helped. I think when you trully know about your speech, you are able to deliver the speech better, due to the fact that you can change gears at a moments notice.
